Farm collaboration – efficiency, savings, flexibility

Collaboration is key to the development of agriculture and the promotion of the circular economy. Cooperation between farmers, companies, research institutions, and the public sector brings many benefits and helps address the challenges facing the sector.

The first episode of MTK-Satakunta’s Power for the Future video series highlights farm-to-farm collaboration. Farmers Matti Levonen and Matias Tammisto share insights from over 15 years of working together. Their collaboration began in 2008 with joint ownership of a seed drill. The network also includes a third farmer, Pasi Tammisto, operating the combine harvester in the background of the video.

The three farms formed a joint machinery company, owning and renting equipment among themselves as needed. Work tasks are clearly divided. For example, one farm handles sowing while another manages harvesting – and farmers can step in for each other when necessary. Crop variety choices and work schedules are planned together to maximize machinery efficiency.

This long-term collaboration has led to cost savings, better workload distribution, and reduced dependency on individual workers. According to the farmers, it requires flexibility and open communication, but it also offers a valuable opportunity to develop farm operations and ensure long-term continuity.
